  • Sesame season in Duc Quang township - from fields to OCOP products.

    Jul 8th, 2026

These days, the golden yellow color of sesame fields, ready for harvest, stretches from the fields outside the embankment in Duc Quang township all the way to the riverside areas of Duc La village. In the entire Duc Quang district, sesame is currently being cultivated on 50 hectares of land. After about two months of meticulous work, the people of Duc Quang are entering the sesame harvest season; a crop that has long been closely associated with the alluvial soil along this riverbank. Thanks to its suitability for fertile sandy loam soil, sesame plants grow well and are resistant to pests and diseases, so growers need to use almost no pesticides. Therefore, many households continue to maintain and expand their cultivation areas year after year. This year, thanks to favorable weather conditions, the sesame plants developed very well and yielded a high harvest. In the entire Duc Quang county, 50 hectares are currently planted with sesame, of which approximately 15 hectares are under intensive production. Thanks to favorable weather conditions and proper care, this year's sesame harvest is progressing well and has entered the harvesting stage. Previously, sesame seeds were mainly sold in their raw form, leading to low economic productivity. In recent years, thanks to the sesame oil production model in the region, sesame seeds are being purchased for processing, contributing to an increase in the value of agricultural products. Each hectare of sesame provides approximately 80 million VND in economic return. When the sesame plants turn yellow, people begin harvesting, drying, and then separating the seeds. In mid-May, shortly after the spring peanut harvest, Tran Thi Huong's family (in Duc La village) began planting sesame as a summer crop on an area of approximately 0.3 hectares (3 sao). According to Ms. Huong, sesame has become one of the crops that provides quite good economic returns in recent years. On average, with good care, 50 kg of product is obtained from each sao. After harvesting, the sesame seeds are separated and dried, then sold to the Mai Tinh sesame oil processing plant at a price of approximately 80,000 VND per kilogram. Ms. Huong stated: "The time from planting to harvesting for black sesame plants is less than two months. Growing sesame requires little maintenance, the investment cost is low, but the yield and economic efficiency are quite high. Each plot of land generates approximately 4 million VND in income. Sesame seeds are sold directly to traders and also supplied to oil processing plants, so the market is quite stable." Mai Tinh sesame oil is OCOP 3-star certified and is processed from sesame seeds grown in the alluvial plains of Duc Quang township. Sesame plants not only provide a stable source of income for the local population, but are also the raw material for Mai Tinh sesame oil, which has been awarded 3 stars by OCOP and is one of the region's iconic products.Produced from carefully selected sesame seeds and processed through roasting, pressing, and filtering, this sesame oil carries the unique aroma of the countryside outside the farm. OCOP certified, the product is highly appreciated by consumers in the market for its quality and safety. Mr. Bui Ngoc Bien, President of the Duc Quang County Farmers' Union, added: “The region is not only focused on selling raw materials, but is also developing a sesame value chain through the Mai Tinh oil pressing plant. The OCOP 3-star sesame oil product helps increase the value of agricultural products, create more job opportunities, and raise the income of the people. In the future, we will continue to work in coordination with relevant departments to support our members in expanding their raw material areas, improving product quality, and making sesame oil a symbolic product of the region, thus contributing to raising the income of the people.” This year's sesame harvest brought great joy to the people living outside the dike in Duc Quang County; they had a bountiful harvest and received good prices. The Duc Quang people have leveraged the natural advantages of riverside fields, seemingly suitable only for short-term crops, to turn sesame cultivation into a commercial product. The combination of raw material production and deep processing is paving a sustainable way, contributing to increased incomes for people living outside the region's dikes.
