  • New sesame processing plant worth 35 M$ comes on stream in Sofala

    Nov 14th, 2025

The new factory, which employs more than a thousand workers, was built in the district of Dondo, in the central province of Sofala, as a result of an investment by the Mozambican government in partnership with the Kingdom of the Netherlands. “This plant represents much more than industrial infrastructure. It is a living symbol of our determination to achieve the economic independence that we are laying the foundations for. For decades sesame, like so many other agricultural products, went out without being industrially processed to have added value,” said Daniel Chapo, stressing that with this unit, the product will now be exported with certified quality and with national pride. According to a AIM, The new state-of-the-art factory will serve around 35,000 small sesame producers in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete and Zambézia, who already have a market for their product. Mozambique ranks among the largest producers of sesame in the world. Sesame cultivation currently supports more than 35,000 small producers in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Zambézia, Tete and Sofala. “At the national level, sesame production is around 200,000 tons per year and contributes 25% of the total, with the districts of Dondo, Caia, Chemba, Marínguè, Nhamatanda and Gorongosa standing out,” said the Mozambican statesman.
