Agricultural laborers engaged in extracting sesame from harvested sesame plants in Karuppambulam village. Sesame harvesting has intensified in the Vedaranyam area. In the Vedaranyam area, which is rich in irrigated lands, after the paddy harvest, farmers cultivate sesame and pulses in the fallow lands. In some fields pulses and sesame are grown as a mixed crop and in some fields only sesame is cultivated. In this situation, most of the farmers are currently cultivating only sesame as a stand-alone crop. Sesame is cultivated on about 10 thousand acres.Meanwhile, intermittent heavy rains last April inundated the sloping lands and affected sesame plants. Sesame plants only partially survived in the uplands. Currently, sesame plants are being harvested.Sesame seeds can be harvested with plants or piled up with roots. After one week, the sesame seeds are piled in the sun and the sesame seeds are extracted. Thus the work of extraction is in full swing. At present, a kilo of sesame is purchased from private agencies for Rs.90 to Rs.100. However, farmers said that the sesame yield was low due to the rains.
