  • Organic tahini that went to Walmart stores nationwide recalled on salmonella concerns

    Aug 24th, 2022

One lot of Mighty Sesame Organic Tahini has been recalled because it might be contaminated with salmonella, manufacturer Rushdi Food Industries announced. The recalled tahini is in 10.9-ounce squeezable bottles, has an expiration date of “3/28/23” and went to Walmart stores nationwide and other retail stores in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut during the first two weeks of May. Salmonella strikes 1.35 million Americans each year, according to the CDC. Of that group, it hospitalizes about 26,500 and kills 420. Most at risk for the worst effects are senior citizens, children under 5 and those with damaged immune systems. Most people get fever, vomiting, stomachaches and diarrhea that starts around 12 to 72 hours after eating the tainted food and runs for four to seven days. “This recall was initiated when the company received a notification by the FDA and the West Virginia Department of Health of the potential presence of salmonella in this specific lot,” the Rushdi-written, FDA-posted recall notice said. “The facility reviewed cleaning procedures, environmental monitoring program results, process flow and possible root of contamination without any positive findings.”
