  • Sesame: The secret of new Malian millionaire

    Feb 7th, 2023

At this time of year, many Malian farmers have earned millions from the production of sesame. Favored by strong demand from markets in Asian countries, sesame cultivation is becoming the priority for farmers in certain regions of the country, such as Koulikoro. Taking advantage of the very remunerative price of sesame, farmers devote most of their production efforts to this easy-to-maintain crop . Sesame becomes a source of wealth for all social categories: young and old people of both sexes. Mali produced in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively 29,000, 52,609 and 45,217.01 tons of sesame. The sector contributes to improving the incomes of many people, including women and young people, who make it their main income-generating agricultural activity. There are two sesame production systems in Mali: organic sesame and conventional sesame, according to professionals. The sesame sector employs more than 450,000 families in rural areas. The areas exploited in 2022, approximately 120,000 ha with an average yield of 530 kg/ha, making it possible to estimate national production at more than 60,000 tonnes. The producers wish to conclude a program contract with the government for the development of the sector over the period 2023-2028. According to them, this will allow Mali to be prosperous and strong both nationally and internationally. The success of this culture is such that the State is beginning to take an interest in it. Thus, to participate in the appropriation of the interprofession of this sector, the direct actors met within the Union of the Interprofession of the sesame sector of Mali (USMA). During the High Council for Agriculture, held on April 12, 2022, the president of the transition recommended the promotion of certain crops to reduce our dependence on the import of consumer products. Thus, Minister Modibo Keïta reassured the members of the interprofession of the support of his department in achieving the objectives it has set itself. He called for further consolidation of the sector, making it more competitive to take advantage of the benefits of international trade due to the specificity and growing demand of the product. According to the president of the sesame interprofession of Mali, Soumaïla Coulibaly, agriculture is at the heart of many development objectives. But he deplores the fact that it has not yet reached its full development potential as an economic accelerator and social stabilizer. The sesame interprofession was created in 2016 and recognized by the Higher Council for Agriculture. And Mali's sesame sector aims to develop and promote the sector as well as defend the common professional interests of its members.
