  • Paraguay: 30% of the sesame harvest was exported

    Jun 1st, 2022

Until April, just over 5,000 tons of sesame were sent to the international market out of a total of 18,000 that were harvested this year of the confectionery variety. The president of the Paraguayan Chamber of Exporters of Sesame, Gilberto Ozorio, commented that in July it is proposed to complete 100% of the sales of seeds, coming from small producers.Although the prices did not meet the expectations of the businessmen, the payment from Japan largely compensated for the gap in the international market. This allowed family farming to receive an average of G. 9,000 per kilo, while the prospects for foreign exchange earnings point to USD 35 million at the end of the year, plus another USD 16 million from seeds from mechanized crops in Chaco.Ozorio mentioned that the greatest benefit was in the primary sector with the intention of not discouraging the next campaign that starts in September. Like other agricultural items, sesame was affected by the drought. From an initial expectation of 30,000 tons from the small parcels, only 18,000 were obtained.
