  • Sesame farmers net record price of 185/kg for harvest

    Aug 4th, 2023

Trichy: Sesame farmers in Lalgudi and Pullambadi blocks of Trichy district are celebrating this season as they have received an all-time high price for their produce. Around 30 tonnes of sesame was recently auctioned at the Lalgudi regulated market committee, fetching farmers a record-breaking price of 185 per kg for their harvest. This marks a significant increase of 50 per kg compared to the prices they obtained last year.On Wednesday, 15 farmers who brought their sesame to the regulated marketing committee in Lalgudi earned a total of 1.75 lakh through the auction, selling their produce for 185.60 per kilogram,” said G Vivek, superintendent of the marketing committee. “This price stands out as the highest in the past few years, considering that last year’s prices ranged from 120 to 130 per kg,” he stated. Sesame cultivation covered approximately 1,500 acres in Lalgudi and Pullambadi blocks. Farmers initiated cultivation in late April, with harvest time falling in the last week of July. Despite good expectations due to healthy crop growth, unseasonal rains in May unfortunately damaged the crops, leading to a lower yield this year, said N Veerasekaran, the state spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan Sangam.“In the previous year, sesame sales amounted to 60 lakh, whereas this year’s sales have reached 55 lakh as of Wednesday. Farmers are content with the e-Nam registration system, where they can register their crop details, and were delighted with the excellent prices they received for their produce,” G Vivek added.
