  • Sesame and chia exports are out of the Argentine market, they say

    Jan 31st, 2023

In addition to the banana sector, sesame and chia producers face obstacles to exporting the grain to Argentina. This is due to the multiple requirements established by the neighboring country for the entry of products. As explained by the Paraguayan Chamber of Sesame Exporters (Capexse), they hope that this situation can be unlocked and regional integration strengthened. “That means that we are out of that market at the moment. Each one of them has a good portfolio of clients in Argentina, which are not being able to acquire our production due to their internal problems," said Gilberto Ozorio, head of the union, for La Nación/Nación Media. He asserted that the Foreign Ministry and the Paraguayan embassy in Argentina should act in this regard. In that sense, he said that from the area they plan to take action on this. “We would like to speak with the relevant organizations and that this situation can be resolved. I understand that the banana growers made a request at the government level, but we are now facing the same problem,” he commented, adding that unfortunately the requirements to access that destination are extremely bureaucratic, which makes it difficult to work. Dynamism in exports The representative of the sector said that the flow of operating capital must be dynamic and cannot exceed 30 or 60 days. Currently, the term for the payment of shipments is from 90 to 180 days. “Any exporter of these items cannot spend two months from the acquisition of the material. It is to collect as soon as possible once it is embarked ”, he pointed out. Likewise, he considered that it is necessary to strengthen trade in the region at the level of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) or Latin America, which can be a very good opportunity for neighboring countries and companies. "We must develop and strengthen regional trade in all our products, at least for our country," he stressed. It should be noted that according to data from the Investment and Export Network (Rediex), from January to December the income of foreign currency from shipments of sesame had a negative variation of 32%, with US$ 35,465,175 million in 2022 compared to to US$ 52,808,728 million in 2021. critical situation It should be noted that to this is added the critical economic situation of limited access to purchase foreign currency. Therefore, they cannot comply with import payments and in the case of Paraguayan exporters, the most affected are those of pineapple and banana, whose debt to be regularized in terms of arrears amounts to US$ 11 million in terms of bananas and US$ 1 million for pineapple. According to the latest news, the Argentine authorities would reduce the term for the release of dollars to importers, with which local exporters could receive their payments in 30 days and not in 180 or more. Meanwhile, the National Chancellery had promised to mediate with the Argentine authorities to speed up payment to local producers, specifically for these two items.
