  • Korea:Demand for sesame pest control management due to the prolonged rainy season

    Aug 11th, 2022

Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services (Director Hyung-Ho Suh) asked for control management due to the spread of sesame diseases and pests due to the continuous heatwave and the prolonged rainy season during the summer sesame harvest season. Sesame is a tropical semi-arid crop, and if it rains continuously during the harvest season, the damage caused by fungal diseases such as late blight, wilt, leaf blight, and powdery mildew increases due to high temperature and humidity. Even in a well-drained field, if continuous rainfall affects the respiration of the roots, the growth is weakened and the harvest season tends to be accelerated. Also, if the field dries out after harvesting sesame due to the continuous rainy season, the vinyl covered with strong winds and rains is often torn or the bundled hem is torn down, which can lead to poor quality. In order to prevent such damage, the first thing to do is to repair the drainage channel so that water drains smoothly, promote growth through foliar fertilization (urea 0.5 to 1%), and to control fungal disease by mixing it with an electrodeposition agent. Fungal diseases that are mainly transmitted from the soil, such as wilt disease and late blight, are very difficult to control. When control is difficult due to the high number of diseases throughout the field, it is better to haveten the harvest early. In the field where leaf blight and powdery mildew mainly occur on leaves, the damage should be minimized with pesticide control. In addition, since sesame seeds fall to the ground, losses occur, so it is efficient to minimize damage by using a facility house if possible. When drying in a facility house, if you hang sesame seeds upside down on a drying rack, the sesame will fall naturally without threshing, dramatically reducing labor and drying safely from typhoons and rainfall. Dr. Kim Ki-hyeon, Crop Research Division, Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services said, “When the rainy season is long or there is a lot of precipitation like this year, it is necessary to predict the occurrence of wet damage and take countermeasures to minimize the damage from pests and pests. ~Thirdary fungal disease damage can occur, so a high yield is possible only when it is safely dried in a well-ventilated place or in a facility house.”
