  • Persistence of farmers in rain-fed sesame cultivation

    Jul 17th, 2022

Rainfed sesame cultivation in Virudhunagar is the ardent belief of the farmers of Virudhunagar. As Virudhunagar is a dry land, rainfed crops such as sunflower, sesame, corn etc. are continuously cultivated. In this case, sesame crop is being widely cultivated. It does not require any kind of irrigation such as well irrigation and irrigation channels. It grows with sufficient moisture in the ground. Due to this, sesame is widely grown in the rural areas of Virudhunagar. At the same time, there is a need for the production of ghee. It is in the Virudhunagar market that the price of ghee is fixed and essential for sesame cultivation. Currently, 75 kg of sesame is sold at Rs.8700 and 1 kg is sold at Rs.100. Maracheku oil is produced in front of many people's houses and shops. Thus, sesame is a non-lossy crop for Virudhunagar district. Currently, all the cultivated sesame crops are growing in a good stocking condition. Agriculture Department should increase the awareness among the rural farmers and increase the area under sesame cultivation.
